St. Andrew’s Day Tribute to Scots–and Scotts

November 30, 2011

Almighty God, who gave such grace to your apostle Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him: Give us, who are called by your Holy Word, grace to follow him without delay, and to bring those near to us into his gracious presence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Collect for St. Andrew from the Book of Common Prayer

Andrew the Apostle, whose feast day is November 30, is commemorated in both the Eastern and Western Churches as the first disciple called by Jesus.  He is remembered for bringing with him his brother, Simon (aka, Peter), and he is the patron saint of Scotland. In the US, the first bishop of the Episcopal Church, Samuel Seabury (who was born, ironically, on November 30, 1729), was consecrated by bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church in Aberdeen in 1784 (a recent unpleasantness between His Majesty George III and the American colonies making his consecration in London by English bishops impossible at the time).

As a tribute to Blessed Andrew, our Scottish sisters and brothers, and to all who are or wish they were Scots (or Scotts), below is a link to the YouTube clip of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guard piping “Highland Cathedral” at Dunblane Cathedral. Happy St. Andrew’s Day!
